Afghanistan signed and ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2012­. This has led to an uptick in NGOs and visibility for Afghans with war-related injuries and disabilities but has almost entirely left out those with mental disabilities, despite having policies in place to care for this community.


Window of Hope , a center in Kabul that takes in children who have lost their parents or have been abandoned by their families, is one of a handful of places for these children to receive care.


The Afghan government recently approved land for the construction of Afghanistans first comprehensive support center for special needs children, including those who have been orphaned and abandoned, as well as adults living with a disability.
